John Westacott, the executive producer of 60 Minutes with the longest tenure, passed away following what is believed to have been a medical emergency on a yacht in Sydney Harbour outside Vaucluse.

Westacott, a former director of Nine News and Current Affairs, perished on Sunday in Sydney’s eastern suburbs after falling off a boat. He could not be saved, and he passed away at the scene, according to New South Wales police on Monday. Westacott, who was in his early 70s, was revealed to have passed away on Sunday by colleagues at Nine. In 2009, he left the network after 25 years of service.

John Westacott Career

Former journalist Westacott worked for both the Australian newspaper and the Daily Telegraph. The Today show, A Current Affair, and 60 Minutes were all under his leadership as he continued to dominate the news and current affairs at Nine for more than two decades.

While working at 60 Minutes until 2010, Westacott was a legend in Sydney’s television business and was hailed as the father of “chequebook journalism.” He oversaw the Today Show and A Current Affair, two other popular Nine news programs.

How Did John Westacott Die?

The NSW Police Marine Area Command had to rescue 73-year-old avid yachtsman Westacott after he fell from a boat and into Sydney Harbor on Sunday at around 1.30 p.m. While being observed by terrified bystanders, paramedics from NSW Ambulance spent 30 minutes trying to save Westacott at Vaucluse dock.
