Joan Hotchkis, a stage and movie veteran who performed in “The Odd Couple” and “Legacy,” died on September 27. The actress died of congestive heart failure, according to her daughter Paula Chambers, who confirmed the news to Deadline.

Hotchkis obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology and an M.A. in Early Childhood Education before temporarily teaching at a nursery school in New York before beginning a five-decade career in the arts in 1954 when she was 27 years old.

She made her Broadway debut in 1960 in Advise and Consent at the Cort Theatre, where she played Myra in the soap opera The Secret Storm.

Joan Hotchkis was an American stage, screen, and television actress, writer, and performance artist.

Hotchkis’s career began in 1954 when she landed the lead part of Lizzie in “The Rainmaker” at Hollywood’s Players Ring theater. The burgeoning star then returned to New York, where she joined the Actor’s Studio and performed in several TV ads and guest appearances.

She joined The Actors Studio in New York, where she studied with Lee Strasberg and featured in various television advertisements and guest appearances. She met director Bob Foster while filming a commercial; they married in 1958 and had Paula.

In 1971, Hotchkis appeared on The Odd Couple for the first two seasons as Dr. Nancy Cunningham, the elegant girlfriend of Jack Klugman’s messy New York columnist.
